New York, NY, March 25, 2021 – The award-winning Classical Theatre of Harlem, (Producing Creative Director, Ty Jones) is forging alee with ambitious plans to bring back its signature product for audiences this summertime. CTH's "Uptown Shakespeare in the Park" series volition reopen this July with the New York premiere of "Seize the Rex," a reimagining of Shakespeare's "Richard 3" by the honor-winning Volition Power, directed by Carl Cofield and choreographed by Tiffany Rea-Fisher. Some shows will be preceded past CTH's series, "Mettlesome Conversations," featuring intimate live discussions on the intersection between art and social justice.
Power was introduced to Shakespeare in his youth and didn't initially connect to the 400-yr old plays. But as he gained more life feel, he became interested in finding the relationship between classic and gimmicky texts.
Power said that electric current world circumstances inspired him to revisit "Richard 3" to see how it relates to a 21stcentury audience.
"I take ever been a playwright that goes to big questions," Power said. " I think of the times we're in right now, the polarization, the dysfunction, the abuse that exists in society correct now, in our country. Whether it'south his take on the Greeks, Shakespeare or American folklore, he always blends rich storytelling and musical text that forces the audience to lean in and look at the field of study through a unlike lens. I am delighted to collaborate with Will on the New York Metropolis premiere of Seize the King."
COVID safety measures including mandatory masking, digital playbills, distanced seating, and sanitizing stations will be implemented for the rubber and condolement of anybody involved. Carl Cofield directed several plays for CTH before joining as Associate Ad in 2018. Notable directing credits for CTH include the critically acclaimed productions of The Bacchae, Antigone, Macbeth, The Tempest and Dutchman. As well, he directed the accolade-winning world premiere of Ane Nighttime In Miami for Rogue Automobile Theater and the Denver Center Theatre, A Raisin In the Sun for Two River Theater Company, The Mountaintop for Cleveland Play House, Disgraced for The Denver Heart and Henry IV Role 2 for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, A Midsummer Night'southward Dream for NYU and Twelfth Night for Yale Rep. He holds an MFA from Columbia University. Mr. Cofield is the Chair of Graduate Interim at NYU.

He is known as one of the pioneers and co-creators of hip hop theater, a late 20th Century art form that led the way for future iconic works such equally Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton, as well every bit dozens of hip hop educational activity programs being established throughout the country. Ability is also a master craftsman of traditionally based plays and musicals. His straight play, Fetch Clay, Make Man, has been produced in various LORT theaters and regional companies including the McCarter Theater, New York Theater Workshop, the Round House Theater, True Colors Theater Visitor, The Ensemble Theater, and Marin Theater Company to name a few. Other plays include Stagger Lee (Dallas Theater Company), 5 Fingers of Funk (Children'south Theater Company), The Seven (La Jolla Playhouse, New York Theater Workshop, Ten Thousand Things Theater Visitor), Seize the Male monarch (La Jolla Playhouse, The Alliance Theater), and Detroit Red (Arts Emerson). Power's collaboration with Anne Bogart's SITI Company and composer Julia Wolfe resulted in the functioning slice Steel Hammer (Humana Festival, UCLA Live, Brooklyn Academy of Music, plus World tour).
Ability has received numerous awards for his work as a writer and performer in the field, including The Doris Duke Artist Honour, an Andrew W. Mellon Playwright in Residence Grant, a Lucille Lortel Award, a U.s. Creative person Prudential Fellowship, an NEA/TCG Residency Grant, TCG Peter Zeisler Memorial Honour, an NYFA Honor, a Joyce Foundation Honour, and 2020 Elliot Norton Award (Outstanding New Script, Detroit Red). Currently, Will Power is a Professor of Theater at Occidental College in Los Angeles.
ABOUT THE CLASSICAL THEATRE OF HARLEM
The Classical Theatre of Harlem (CTH) is an American theatre company that tells stories through the lens of the African diaspora. CTH combines original adaptations, music, and dance to present nifty classics of world literature every bit well as contemporary works that will stand the exam of time.
